Northern Ireland Councils Assume Control of Landlord Registration Scheme
As of March 1, 2025, local councils in Northern Ireland have taken over the Landlord Registration Scheme, a move announced by Communities Minister Gordon Lyons.
Originally established in February 2014, the scheme maintains a database of registered private landlords. This transition aims to enhance landlord compliance and strengthen tenant protections.
Key requirements include mandatory registration of all private landlords, with fees set at £70 for online applications and £80 for paper submissions. Registration is valid for three years and covers multiple properties.
Non-compliance can result in fines of up to £2,500.
This change underscores the importance for landlords to stay updated on regulatory shifts to ensure adherence and avoid penalties.
